Press Release
It is with
pleasure we announce the publication of a new book of
Contemporary Art, on the life and work of the Cypriot Artist
Costas Joachim, entitled: COSTAS JOACHIM ‘DIALOGUE
WITH THE SURFACE’ . This book has been written and compiled
by artist and author, Susan Kerr ©2015.
The presentation
of the book will take place on 24th of March at the
Main Lecture Hall of the Central Offices of the Bank of Cyprus,
Stasinou Street, Ayia Paraskevi, Nicosia, at 7.30pm.
The event is
organised by the Pancyprian Cultural Society with President, Dr.
George Kitromilides.
The main
speakers are Mr. Ouranios Ioannides, former Minister of
Education and Culture, and Dr. Eleni S. Nikita, Art Historian.
The book is a
presentation of the life and work of the artist Costas Joachim,
with emphasis on his development as a Cypriot and international
artist through his paintings, exhibitions and participation in
International Biennales such as Venice, Sao Paolo, Paris and
Florence. The aim of the book is to present and to document the
lifetime work of Costas Joachim as a visual artist and painter.
It outlines the life story of Joachim in relation to his
development as an artist; his research into visual perception
and abstraction as a ‘dialogue with the surface’-including his
struggles and achievements, in nearly 500 pages.
In four parts,
the book gives an illustrated chronological biography of the
artist, art criticism internationally, up to 300 colour plates
of his paintings, and speeches and press cuttings from items
over the past fifty years, relating to his exhibitions and work.
From this, it aims to show how an artist, working in Cyprus and
abroad, has tackled the difficulties of life as an artist, and
has achieved recognition for his contribution to Art in Cyprus
and internationally.
Joachim’s
establishment of the Bellapais Studio & Gallery in Bellapais
since 1970, (now functioning in Nicosia) has attracted visitors
from places all over the world such as London, Berlin, Munich,
Moscow, Los Angeles, Acapulco, Paris, Venice and Florence.
Costas Joachim,
born in Bellapais, Cyprus, was educated and gained a Diploma in
Education before winning a scholarship to study at Bath Academy
of Art in UK in 1960, where he studied painting, visual
perception, sculpture, ceramics and also Art Education at the
University of Bristol. Further awards and a British Council
scholarship in 1979 for Post Graduate studies in painting, Art
history and Aesthetics culminated in the Honorary Presidential
Award for Artistic Contribution to the Culture of Cyprus in
2003.
The author,
Susan Kerr, has known Joachim since they met at Bath Academy of
Art in 1961. She studied Fine Arts, Painting and Graphic Design
(NDD) and Art Education in Leicester University (ATD) 1966.
After marrying
Joachim they settled in Cyprus and established their painting
studio in Bellapais. As an educationalist, Susan Kerr has taught

Cyprus, and Visual Arts at all levels at the American

written and compiled by Susan Kerr, has been designed to present

Joachim. The printing of the book was completed in February this
year.

Mr. Ouranios Ioannides, making the opening speech at
the presentation of the book ‘COSTAS JOACHIM
Dialogue with the Surface’. Mr.
Ioannides, in his opening speech, stated that Costas
Joachim was one of the educated painters, one of the
few artists who had represented Cyprus in the
largest capitals of Europe and other parts of the
world.
.. ‘The new work in front of us is a presentation
that sends us back to our roots; our civilisation of
Greece and Cyprus. |
It really traces the roots of ancient
Cyprus, its mythology and history, which, brought to
the surface, we have grown up with. It shows how
these have influenced our culture giving us strength
and belief for the future. I wish to congratulate
Costas and thank him for his cultural creations…’ |

Dr. Eleni S. Nikita, analysing the paintings of
Costas Joachim at the presentation:
Quote:
